Christmas In Rome
Visiting Rome over Christmas is a different way to spend the holidays. The weather is rather mild compared to the conditions in European countries north of Italy, and although some winter days in Rome are grey and rainy, the sun does come out often enough, even allowing people to enjoy lunch outdoors.
And the Romans – most of whom are not around during the height of the summer tourist season – reclaim their city in the winter, giving visitors a glimpse of everyday life.
This time of year is taken very seriously in Rome, and festivities include the Piazza Navona Christmas Market, Natale all’Auditorium (Christmas at the Auditorium), 100 Presepi (Nativity scenes), Vatican Service at St. Peter’s Square, and many Midnight Masses.
One of the more beautiful midnight masses is at the Pantheon. You don’t need tickets, but you should be there by 10 p.m. to get a seat and hear the Gregorian chants. Santa Sabina on the Aventine hill is also popular with Romans for its stunning service in one of the city’s oldest churches.
