Favourite Places: The Orange Garden
On top of one of Rome’s most idyllic hills, the Aventine, you will find the atmospheric Orange Garden (“Giardino degli Aranci/Parco Savelli”), where many people come to relax and watch the sunset over the city.
The view is quite breathtaking – not quite as spectacular as the view from “Il Pincio” at the top of the Villa Borghese Gardens, but more intimate – and you can make out astounding detail since the Tiber, the ancient palazzi of Trastevere, and even St. Peter’s Basilica seem so close.
The Orange Garden featured in Federico Fellini’s film Nights of Cabiria (“Le notti di Cabiria”, 1957), as a backdrop to part of the courtship between the heroine of the film (a prostitute, hopelessly romantic and sentimental, uniquely interpreted by Giulietta Masina) and a man named Oscar, who turns out to be a poignant disappointment.
Just down the street (about 20m from the end, on your right) from the Orange Garden, you’ll find a small key hole in a large green door.
It offers a delightful view through a grove of trees to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica – one of the hundrets of secrets you can discover while in Rome.

It was so named because it faced all four directions, a rarity. In older times, traders would stand underneath it to conduct business. Now, either this was just a subset of them, or they were all ridiculously thin, because the arch wasn’t that big. Don’t go out of your way, but if you’re here, walk on by. […]
